Topic: Food Advertising for Children

Description:
To introduce children to food advertising for children, they will participate in the production of a commercial targeted to children. This lesson ill be taught over a 1.5 week period, each day a different component of production will be completed. There may be an option for cultural arts teachers to collaborate as well.

Here is a brief synopsis of the week. Each activity will run no more than 25-30 minutes.
Day 1: The lesson starts with the design aspect
Day 2: Viewing children’s food commercials and having a short Q&A
- Do you know what a commercial is?
- What did we just watch?
- What do you think the commercial was saying?
- Who do you think should watch the commercial and why?
Students will peer share in groups of two and afterwards some of the students’ responses will be recorded on chart paper and hung up in the class for all to see. We would extend the discussion to a writing activity where the students draw one thing that they remember from the commercial that they viewed in class.
Day 3: Learning the song: During Reader’s Workshop block, students will be introduced to a book and story, “Joseph Had a Little Overcoat,” by S. Taback. At the end of the story there is a song for the book and it describes the story that was read to the students. (This activity may be extended in the computer lab during the computer block and the children will get an opportunity to hear and see the song being sung on YouTube).
Day 4: Children will cut and paste their vegetable drawings to a heavy card stock paper and a paint mixing stick. Teach will send home song words attached to homework.
Day 5: During cultural arts (music) the students will practice the song. During writers’ workshop, students will be recorded singing the song and holding up their cut-out drawings of vegetables. We will view the video during closing circle.

Each stage of production will be video recorded by a teacher assistant.
